Before I bought and read Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth, I saw the author on Oprah. The montage at the start of the show depicted several women talking about how they hated themselves because of their weight. It was one of the saddest film clips I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I related to everything they shared. It made me weep.

Like so many women, I have struggled my whole life with my weight, with eating and with the self-loathing that comes with being fat and out of control. In her new book, Roth takes the reader through the journey of transformation that she facilitates in her yearly retreats. It is very powerful.

Roth also shares her own story about her weight and food trials. And even though I have read other Roth books, this one really hit me hard, and in a good way. Specifically, I was transformed by the simple idea that to heal from this addiction to food, we need to stop being at war with ourselves. Being at war with ourselves means those nasty things we say within about ourselves. It means the constant struggle and fight of dieting, losing, gaining even more and depriving ourselves again. Just the practice of stopping that war has given me a lot of relief and as a result, I have noticed a change in my addictive patterns.

I think you will gain a lot from this book even if you don’t have addictive eating patterns. As Roth points out, women are valued for their looks. This is a sad reality of our society. But by changing that reality within ourselves and learning to value ourselves for simply existing, we regain our self-worth regardless of what others may preach. This is a powerful, exciting process for any woman to undertake.
